Te Pūtahi Māori o Manurewa

Manurewa, Auckland

Towing a hardline between heavy industrial and single-family homes, a greenfield site off Browns Road in Manurewa will see the co-location of two Māori immersion schools. The convergence of Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Manurewa and Te Wharekura o Manurewa, afforded a comprehensive delivery of building and pedagogy to preserve and grow Te Reo Māori. Alongside a Kohanga Reo and adult learning centre, this single campus will look to embody local histories and extend principles to support Te Aho Matua.

The proposal’s 2 storey circuitous shape is arranged in clusters of self-sufficient learning communities, with full height voids boring connection to ground level. As parents accompany tamariki throughout their cultural journey, each learning space is anchored by a whānau room. The focal library atrium is placed next to adaptations of wharekai [food technology], wharenui [multipurpose hall] and outdoor courtyard, which combine to serve multimodal gathering, performance and celebration.

Te Pūtahi Māori o Manurewa

Manurewa, Tāmaki-makaurau
