Te Kura Mana Māori o Whangaparāoa

Cape Runaway, Bay of Plenty

At the edge of Cape Runaway, 100km east of Opotiki, a disparate arrangement of ageing school buildings were met with a series of interior and exterior strategies to ameliorate a special character kura. Exposed to the prevailing westerlies from the shores of Whangaparāoa Bay, timber slatted wind barriers protected the new hardscape works that formed a unifying plinth and courtyard. The roof pitch from a new multipurpose space – to house performance, art, food and mattress storage – was lifted and offset to shelter outdoor learning and celebrations.

Nā konā, i whakauru he pūtake hono me tētahi tahuaroa.
