St John’s Church

Hamilton, Waikato

MOAA’s winning competition entry to replace the former 1910 structure, sought to develop an elemental, contemporary form. Square in plan, its nine degrees offset relative its urban grid, draws subtle attention to its street presence while affording visual respite from the existing church complex to which it connects.

The exterior clad in weathered steel, glass and vertical timber fins to balance sun protection and transparency. The patina of these materials acknowledge the neighbourhood’s varied architectural style and seasonal tones of the opposing park.

The interior’s humble function and contemplative mood are diligently ordered by a glulam structural system, with columns and beams divided into five equal bays.
