Te Wharekura o Nga Purapura o Te Aroha
Te Awamutu, Waikato
Sited along the Manipoko stream of Te Awamutu, the proposal courageously arranges 120 learners, from years 1-13 under a single pitched space. A serpentine symbolic river, delineating circulation, carves central breakout rooms to bisect juniors and seniors. These gently curving shapes offer a fluidity between students and staff. The junior and senior learning spaces are lightly separated with cranked, low-lying storage cabinetry and tables shaped as Waka.
The adjacent build is comprised of a multipurpose hall and technology space. Its structural sequence is set by a steel trussed beam and columns, coined as four Pou – Poumua, Potahuhu, Poutokomanawa and Poutuarongo. These stable symbols line the centre of the kura as an expression of kaupapa and sheltering learning opportunities.

He tūtohu awa tōrino, he aratohu rere e whakairo nei te wāwāhinga o ngā teina me ngā tuakana. Mā enei hanga kōpiko e tūpono ka rere pai te wairua ki waenganui i ngā tauira me ngā kaimahi. Kua wāwāhi te ātea o ngā teina ki ngā whata me ngā tēpu waka te hanga.
