Piako House

Hamilton, Waikato

1940s domestic planning may not always align to contemporary living and, as such, the residents of this brick bungalow in Hamilton’s Claudelands area, commissioned new living spaces, alongside a complete internal reconfiguration.

While client and architect hold imaginative intentions, so too do the spaces in question. The character of a room speaks to both existence and potential. In this instance of addition and subtraction, careful attention to qualities of light, material, scale, texture and colour, contribute to the part-to-whole relationship. The original Huntly bricks against the warm cedar cladding, the existing rimu and matai flooring adjacent contemporary concrete, the sequence of partitions and the introduction of a subtle curve are episodes of intimate and playful spatial experiment.

Whare Piako

Kirikiriroa, Waikato
